Textual Activities 

1.Find out the reason of the man for staying at the place.

Ans: To make a few shillings the man stayed at the place.

2. The stranger stays with the Sergeant. Find a way ...... by him to allow him.

ANS: The stranger stays with the Sergeant by telling him that he would wait for sailors. The sailors would buy a ballad off him.

3. Write about the persuasive approach of the man?
Ans: The man wanted to stay at quay .He persuades the sergeant to allow him to sit on the steps .Then he tells the sergeant that he knows the man he is waiting for.

4.The man and the Sergeant need each other’s support. Find such examples.
Ans: The following conversation shows they need each other’s support
Sergeant : You know him? Come back here. What sort is he?
Man : Come back is it, Sergeant?

1. Compose 8 to 10 lines. Narrate any incident in your life without using any rhyming pattern.

normal standards; but the chapter makes a case against it. Giver reasons.
Ans: Chemical fertilifer , pesticides and insecticide are used to yield more crop. Food grown in this process is unsafe . Consumption of such food leads to illness . Even the fertility  of the land gets damaged . So the author prefers less crop grown out of organic fertilifer. 
(ii) Describe in about 150 words your experience similar to the writer’s
when you pursued something and reached your goal.
(iii) The writer goes in search of an invaluable indigenous variety ofy
seeds. List three reasons for the importance of keeping records of
our indigenous agricultural practices.

Brain storming


(A1) There are a number of challenges a farmer in India faces. Discuss with your friend, how it is possible to improve the condition of farmers.


(A2) The poet has observed the sower closely. Express in your words the reverence the poet has for the sower.
Ans: The poet has great respect for the sower. The sower is described as hardworking and a man of patience. He is dominant.
(A3) The poet is prompted to call the sower an ‘august personality’ which means one who reached the highest position in his work place.
Explain this using the following points.

The sower is working hard. Though the working hours came to an end, he lingers in his work place. He sows the seeds and waits for the crop all the season. He works day and night to grow his crops.

My Teaching Practices



*The way I dealt with 'Being Neighborly' in classroom.*

I began with ice breaking activities. I got oral as well as written responses. Students came up with different responses. I accepted them. For the web diagram I drew it on the white board and asked students to complete. When they were unable to express in English, I allowed them to express in Marathi or Hindi and provided them with necessary words /expression and sentence structure in English.
Henceforth I introduced them with the writer and the write up in short. (I didn't read each line from introduction section, asked them to read at home.)
While dealing with the story my focus was on reading. I read the dialogue in a bit louder tone. I asked them to explain the meaning of simple sentences. I allowed them to discuss. I read and explained 4 to 5 sentences together. I explained in simple English with gesture and actions so that students may understand. I wrote meanings of words. I provided synonyms and antonyms whenever possible. I drew their attention to activities given in margin at the necessary time. I asked them to complete with the help of the text. I didn't feel the need of explaining each line in Marathi. *(In the beginning they did not understand still I explained in English. Within a month they will become habitual to listen in English. I strongly believe understanding a story or essay in mother tongue is of no use to learn English. )*
I reminded them the names of four sisters every now and then.
I asked them to identify the speaker of the dialogue when it is not mentioned (page no. 4, 11). I treated it as nuisances of spoken English. I introduced stress pattern for reading purpose . Here I didn't give explanation. I drew their attention towards the of phrases like *bag and baggage* and grammatical use *too..... to and exclamatory sentences .* I would ask some statements for true and false, to complete as ice breaker activities every next day. Activities in the margins helped me a lot to deal with the story. I made as much use of them as possible.
After completing the story I went for brain storming activities. We had discussion on it. I asked them to write completed activities in notebook at home. I summed up the story in short . 
I introduced them  with  different activities . (I use printed activity sheet for std 12 )

If winter comes, can spring be far behind?


If winter comes, can spring be far behind? is a quote of a great nature poet P. B. Shelley. The quote means spring, a symbol of life and joy follows the winter, a symbol of death. It is symbolic of life. As there is cycle of seasons in nature, the life is a web of sorrow and happiness. Pain is not permanent. It is followed by gain of happiness. It makes us optimistic. It gives rise to hopefulness.
    The poet was undergoing a bad patch in poetry. Good poetry wasn't coming of his way. But he didn't give in. He strongly believed in his strength. He was hopeful of good poetry soon. Everyone of us has tough times in life. We should remember that there will be a good time sooner or later. Yuvraj Singh was diagnosed with cancer. He got treatment and came out with a new vigour to play cricket.
    Every cloud has silver lining.  One should have positive attitude towards life. If you think you can, you can. If you think you can't, you can't. Morning follows night. There is light after darkness.






Eat to live not live to eat'

'Eat to live not live to eat' is an idiom. It stands as an advice of doctor to obese.It is an advice for everyone of us in the age of fast food. Eat to live means eating for survival and to energize the body. Live to eat means taking interest only in food. It is giving more importance to the tongue and belly than to the whole body.
In the world of busy life schedule no one has much time to take care of health. One should not forget that 'Health is Wealth'
Those who live to eat fall prey to innumerable diseases. To much eating or eating all the time gives a shelter to disease. In the school and college students eat fast food. Such food is tasty so they keep eating as if they live to eat. Parents also bring such food at home. Nowadays going to restaurants for weekend,birthdays and anniversaries have become a status symbol. People are taking more interest in eating than jogging. They eat after morning walk; they eat before going to office; they eat during office hours and they eat while reaching home. After reaching they set out with family to eat. Their days are filled with eating and eating.

This practice is not healthy. So we should eat to fuel the body. Breakfast, lunch and dinner is a wise way to be healthy. The food we consume should have nutrients. Increase in diseases like obesity,cardiac arrest, blood pressure, sugar level, hypertension etc. is the effect of too much eating. To live a happy and healthy life we should remember the doctor's advice
'Eat to live not live to eat'.


Expansion of Idea

A bad workman blames his tools.*


One who fails in his efforts /work gives excuses. He/she assumes other things responsible for the failure. Instead of taking responsibility of uncompleted work some people find fault with the equipment. They blame the equipment for the their failure. They do not accept their fault.
My friend was repairing a cell phone. He put all the efforts. After a while he handed the phone to the owner. The phone persisted the same problem. When the owner complained, he told him that the cell phone was outdated. It was beyond repair. He suggested to buy a new one. The owner went to another repair store and got his phone repaired. Here it means that my friend had little knowledge of phone repairing and he could not repair it. But he blamed the cell phone itself.

On many occasions people consider them skilled and expert. In spite of their failure they blame on other or equipment. They blame always others for their unfinished work. It means such persons are bad workmen and they blame the tools they are using.

When Tenzing and Hillary reached the summit, Tenzing in utter joy said,
“We have done it.” In this sentence the subject (we) is the doer of the
action while it (achieving the feat) is the Object . The verb of passive voice
is formed by using the correct form of the verb ‘to be’ + past participle
of the main verb. Construct the sentences accordingly.

Now carefully go through the changes in both the sentences and do the
changes accordingly in the remaining sentences.
