Trees are our best friends.

Speech

Pollution is a big problem nowadays. We are the witness to air pollution and water pollution. Who aren't responsible for this ? We all are polluting air and water. Emission from vehicles, industrial waste, burning of garbage and use of chemicals  are the major causes of pollution. The pollution is hazardous to human being and animals. It leads to severe diseases. 
 Some of these can not be removed but repaired. Trees play a vital role in stopping the pollution. Trees absorb the emissary and harmful gases and keep the air clean. So the more trees, the less pollution. We should begin stopping the felling of trees and wildfire. At same time we should plant trees. It's not a job of government and NGOS only. Every individual has to plant the trees and save the trees. To make the awareness among the people, we should observe vanmahotsav.  Through such celebration we should stress the importance of trees. Trees are the only source we have for our requirements of oxygen. We breath because of trees. Trees absorb what we exhale. Trees release what we need to inhale. So we should accept and believe that no trees no life.  Our every celebration should begin with planting trees. 
Trees are our best friends.

Respected Principal, honourable chief guest, adorable teachers and loving friends,
Today are gathered here to celebrate Dr. Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan's birth anniversary as teachers day.
Paying tribute to Dr. Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan I would like to speak the role of a teacher in shaping the child . In school and college the teacher plays multiple roles. She plays different roles such as friend, philosopher and guide. She treats children as a friend to boost their confidence. She shows them the right path of life and guide them to take the decision.

She plays the role of facilitator and motivator. She makes the lesson easy and motivates students to to get success. She becomes the role model for many students. Her work is not limited to teaching. She has to design a curriculum. While teaching she has to perform and becomes actor, mentor and leader.  On certain occasions students are in need of mentor. Here the teacher extends helping hand. To inculcate the leadership qualities among students, teacher plays a role leader and takes her students to the target. She plays the role of a planner. When students find difficult situations either in study or in personal life, the teacher becomes a counselor for them. In this modern age of technology the teacher becomes technosavy. Assesment is the part and parcel of students' life. Every now and then she plays the role of assessor by assessing students through exams , tests and assignments.

Review on Ek Hota Carver by Veena Gavankar 



















Recently I have read a book 'Ek Hota Carver' by Veena Gavankar. The book is in Marathi on the life of George Washington Carver. It is a biography of a great researcher of nineteenth century.  George was the son of Mary a negro slave. She was living with Mozes Carver's family as he has bought her. One day Mary and her son were taken away by some dacoits to resell the slaves as were the practice in those days.  Mozes tried to get back them and he succeeded in getting back only Mary's son in exchange of a horse. Mozes and his wife Suazanbai brought up this child as their child. He developed his interest in gardening. He was very weak and dumb child. He was sent to Neose for schooling. It was a school for Negros. By doing some odd jobs, he completed his schooling. He developed interest in painting and music too. He was good at education and started to speak without staggering. He was neglected higher education at Highland University because he was black. He got admission in State Iowa College. George got his MS degree in Agricultural and Bacterial Botany and became a professor of the same. Then he was invited in the school of Tuskegee . He accepted the invitation and joined the school. Here he joined hands with Dr. Washington Booker to serve his people. He did many researches there for the welfare of farmers nearby. George Carver invented peanut butter, paints and cotton product.He prepared laboratory instruments from the waste. He made researches in groundnut, sweet root, cotton. He discovered some eatables. 
The book is very interesting. The narrator creates mental picture of that period before us.
The language used here is simple and appropriate to the period. While reading the book we became the part of it. The author of this book Veena Gavankar has used her unique style giving details. The book introduces us with great researcher. It teaches us the hard work, sacrifice and gratitude.

Mayank : I think the topic of the discussion is very relevant these days. Having a cell phone in every hand, social media like Whatsapp, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter became teenagers' priority. They are spending hours and hours on it. They prefer surfing and sharing to surging creativity. 


Anagha : I agree with Mayank. Social media has taken a place of books and playgrounds. Friends on Facebook are getting more importance than friends on the ground. Features like cut, copy and paste kill the creativity. What do you feel about it Yash?


Yash     : I'm afraid I don't agree with you both. Many teenagers are using social media to reveal their creativity. They are creating videos of their talent and sharing them with the public. Even some youngsters are creating short film and getting appreciation. Social madia has become a strong platform to showcase talent and creativity.

Anuj : I would like to share my view regarding social media. Social media has emerged as a boon . Whether it's a bane or boon depends upon the user. Sometimes we are sticking to social media beyond limit. Spending time in posting and checking for likes, comments and shares will definitely kill creativity. Still I feel that social media has given a platform to learn many things.

Dealing With News Report Writing





Objectives: 1. Encourage students to read newspaper.
2. Enable students to understand parts of news (headline, dateline, intro and main body)
3. Enable students to note down features of headlines.
4. Enable students to prepare news report.
Method: 1. Distribute newspapers to students.
2. Introduction of news, letters to the editor, editorial, article, ads, weather report, classifieds, leaflets, book review, film review if any.
3. Discussion on news.
Time : 1:30 hrs
Execution: About 30 newspapers of the month (The Lokmat Times and The Indian Express) were distributed in the class XII Arts A. One newspaper at one bench and one page one student was the plan. Students were shown different contents of the newspaper. They were introduced with the editorial section, classifieds, letters to the editor, news etc. Later on I zeroed on news. I asked them to find out the brief news of accident, celebration, theft, drowning, strike, arrest and lightening. Students started searching for it. Amazingly they were looking headlines only to guess the news. They pointed out such different news. I asked students to read headlines loudly one by one and wrote those headlines on white board. We held discussion on those headlines. I initiated the discussion by asking them about the tense, voice used in the headlines. I drew their attention towards the omission of article and use of concrete words. Students pointed out the use simple present tense in headlines. One of the students raised the query about the use of simple past tense used in one of the headlines. I explained how it is simple present tense and shortened form of passive voice.
However, I let the students know about the date line and intro. They observed the datelines (Name of the town/city and date, name of news agency) and noted down. Thereafter I led them to the intro/lead. I asked them to read the intro silently. After reading I asked them find out what happened in the news, who involved, where and when. I asked them to relate headline with the intro. I explained how the intro is an extended headline. The headline is converted into intro by using simple past tense, necessary articles, mentioning the place and time indicating with proper prepositions. I had some headlines and shot intros ready with me. I used them to match the pair activity. I asked students to guess the meaning of the headlines. It was not easy for some students. But they tried differently. Instead of telling them the meaning directly I provided the clue.
Lastly students were taken towards the main body. As usual students read the main body. I brought their attention towards how main body is written giving details of the event or story. With this workshop students were given the exposition the news writing and live English.

Child Labour : A Curse To Humanity


Child labour is a blot on humanity. Since time unknown it is practiced in our society. Children being yoked to the work depriving them from the childhood come under child labour category. We see children working in household, hotels, shops, even in industries like crackers, match box manufacturing companies. Instead of using their heads for books, children are using their heads for carrying bricks. Instead of enjoying in school, they are engaged in work pool.
Parents due to poverty are helpless and send their children to work. They support the family income. This is a primary cause of child labour practice. Industries employ children due to low wages. Children work more in less wages without complaints.
Childhood otherwise flourished have been crushed. It gives vent to illiteracy, health problems and pre maturity among children.

If winter comes, can spring be far behind?


If winter comes, can spring be far behind? is a quote of a great nature poet P. B. Shelley. The quote means spring, a symbol of life and joy follows the winter, a symbol of death. It is symbolic of life. As there is cycle of seasons in nature, the life is a web of sorrow and happiness. Pain is not permanent. It is followed by gain of happiness. It makes us optimistic. It gives rise to hopefulness.
    The poet was undergoing a bad patch in poetry. Good poetry wasn't coming of his way. But he didn't give in. He strongly believed in his strength. He was hopeful of good poetry soon. Everyone of us has tough times in life. We should remember that there will be a good time sooner or later. Yuvraj Singh was diagnosed with cancer. He got treatment and came out with a new vigour to play cricket.
    Every cloud has silver lining.  One should have positive attitude towards life. If you think you can, you can. If you think you can't, you can't. Morning follows night. There is light after darkness.






Eat to live not live to eat'

'Eat to live not live to eat' is an idiom. It stands as an advice of doctor to obese.It is an advice for everyone of us in the age of fast food. Eat to live means eating for survival and to energize the body. Live to eat means taking interest only in food. It is giving more importance to the tongue and belly than to the whole body.
In the world of busy life schedule no one has much time to take care of health. One should not forget that 'Health is Wealth'
Those who live to eat fall prey to innumerable diseases. To much eating or eating all the time gives a shelter to disease. In the school and college students eat fast food. Such food is tasty so they keep eating as if they live to eat. Parents also bring such food at home. Nowadays going to restaurants for weekend,birthdays and anniversaries have become a status symbol. People are taking more interest in eating than jogging. They eat after morning walk; they eat before going to office; they eat during office hours and they eat while reaching home. After reaching they set out with family to eat. Their days are filled with eating and eating.

This practice is not healthy. So we should eat to fuel the body. Breakfast, lunch and dinner is a wise way to be healthy. The food we consume should have nutrients. Increase in diseases like obesity,cardiac arrest, blood pressure, sugar level, hypertension etc. is the effect of too much eating. To live a happy and healthy life we should remember the doctor's advice
'Eat to live not live to eat'.

A bad workman blames his tools.*


One who fails in his efforts /work gives excuses. He/she assumes other things responsible for the failure. Instead of taking responsibility of uncompleted work some people find fault with the equipment. They blame the equipment for the their failure. They do not accept their fault.
My friend was repairing a cell phone. He put all the efforts. After a while he handed the phone to the owner. The phone persisted the same problem. When the owner complained, he told him that the cell phone was outdated. It was beyond repair. He suggested to buy a new one. The owner went to another repair store and got his phone repaired. Here it means that my friend had little knowledge of phone repairing and he could not repair it. But he blamed the cell phone itself.

On many occasions people consider them skilled and expert. In spite of their failure they blame on other or equipment. They blame always others for their unfinished work. It means such persons are bad workmen and they blame the tools they are using.

Polite Words are nothing but Hypocrisy
View: People use polite words very often with strangers. With the dear and near ones they forget to use polite words. Instead they behave rudely. What does this kind of behaviour show? Isn’t it hypocrisy? On many occasions just to get their work done, people use polite words. After the work is done, they start abusing behind. Some people make use of polite words in English as a status symbol. Polite words on the face and rude word on back is a common practice among the people. This shows polite words are nothing but hypocrisy

Counter-view: Politeness costs nothing but buys everything.
It cannot be said that politeness is the mark of hypocrisy. Many people are of the opinion that politeness begets politeness. The use of polite words can calm the storm of hot words. Polite words have the power of establishing peace and win-win atmosphere. What people speak behind you doesn’t make any difference if they are polite with you. Due to their politeness, you become polite. You pass this politeness to others. This becomes a circle.
