2.5 Father Returning Home

Dilip Chitre was a celebrated bilingual poet. He was a translator with a remarkable work in Marathi and English.

The poem ’Father Returning Home’ is taken from ‘Traveling in a cage’- by Dilip Chitre. It draws a portrait of a suburban father as commuter.

The poem depicts dull and monotonous routine of father. The father is alienated in his home. His children refuse to share their joys and sorrows with the hardworking father. This painful loneliness is a symbol of man’s isolation from the materialistic man-made world.

The poem has no regular rhyming words and rhyme scheme. The poem is divided into two stanzas. In the first stanza the vivid description of father as a commuter draws the attention. In the second stanza his painful loneliness at home is shown. Simile, alliteration, onomatopoeia and synecdoche, transferred epithet are the striking figures of speech used in the poem.

                       The underlying message of the poem generation gap in the modern age has created disrespect for the elders. In spite of all the odds the father devote his life for the children.

 

     

                                     

Poetic Appreciation: 2.6 Money


The poem ‘Money’ is written by William H. Davies, a Welsh poet. After several years of a wandering life, he published his volume of poems.

The poem ‘Money’ tells us about the rich man who wants to be a poor man to find real happiness. It is when we do not have money or have lost our money, we realize how important the money is.

There are five stanzas of four lines each. The poet has maintained the particular rhyming pattern in the first four stanzas. The second line rhymes with the fourth line. He has made use of repetition skilfully. Poetic devices like inversion, simile, onomatopoeia and antithesis made the effective.

The poem is closely associated with the modern world. The underlying message in the poem is money cannot give you eternal happiness.

                                2.3 The Inchcape Rock
‘The Inchcape Rock’ a ballad is written by Robert Southey. He was a poet Laureate of England. ‘The Inchcape Rock’ is a very popular poem with the school children. It is about attempt by the Abbot of Aberbrothok to install a warning on Inchcape and removal by a pirate, Ralph. The pirate met with an accident on the same rock in his return journey.
The poem is in the form of ballad. It tells a story. The poem is dramatic and narrative. There are seventeen stanzas of four lines each. The poem follows the rhyme scheme aabb.
The poet Robert Southey has used vivid words. It creates mental pictures. The poem seems to be live pictures. Some words are repeated and created a soothing effect. The poem is enriched with poetic devices such as alliteration, repetition, inversion, onomatopoeia, metaphor, personification, simile and apostrophe.
The poem gives us a message that those who do wrong things will meet with due punishment.

Edgar Guest is known as ‘people’s poet’ for his simple style and optimistic tone of writing. The poem ‘Have You Earned Your Tomorrow’ is an inspirational poem.
          The poet is concerned about the readers. He asks them if they have done anything to improve the life of the other people. We are responsible for our good days and bad days.
          The poem is divided into four stanzas of quatrains. The first line rhymes with the second line and the third with the fourth in each stanza. He has used the consistent rhyme scheme throughout the poem.  The first two lines of the first stanza are rhymed with last two lines of the second and the fourth stanzas. The poet raised questions in the poem. There are eleven questions in the poem. It shows the unique style of the poem. Alliteration and interrogation are the poetic devices in the poem.
The poem has the underlying message that it is up to us whether we will have a better future or not. Therefore, we should consider our actions and deeds carefully and plan accordingly for a better future.

Sarojini Naidu is known as the Nightingale of India because of her poetry. ‘Indian Weavers’ is a short poem written by Sarojini Naidu. The poem depicts the three types of garment. The weavers weave at three particulars times of a day. The first stanza of the poem represents the birth, the second stanza represents youth and the last stanza death. These are the three important events in human life.

          The poem is divided in three stanzas of 4 lines each. The first line rhymes with the second, and the third line with the fourth line in each stanza. The poem is in a sing song tone. The poem is in a question answer format.

          The language of the poem is of everyday use. The poetess has used the colour imagery. The use of poetic devices like simile, and metaphor add pictorial effect. Alliteration, rhyming words and rhythm add musical effect.

          The poem depicts three important stages of human life. Human being reacts differently at different stage. Metaphorically morning, noon and evening represents birth, child and death.

The poem ‘Song of the Open Road’ is taken from ‘Leaves of Grass’ by Walt Whitman. It is a beautiful blend of human feelings. It enlightens us with the poet’s self-realizations about the journey of life. Walt Whitman, an American poet, is often called as ‘The Father of free verse’. The title of the poem is significant and apt. The road signifies mobility.
The poem is about self-awareness, free will and tenderness of heart. Staying in one place for too long stagnates the life.
The poem is free verse. It has no regular rhyme and rhythm. It has unique arrangements of words and lines. Three to five lines together make meaning (Complete sense).
The poem is enriched with the poetic devices such as metaphor, alliteration, repetition and paradox. These poetic devices add musical and pictorial effect.
People should take the road as point to start over towards something new. The journey of life should be mobile and always on the road to move on.
